Joe Cole 'hurt' that he could not be a success at Liverpool following loan move to Lille

Joe Cole has admitted that he feels hurt that his spell at Liverpool did not bring him any success.

The creative midfielder joined the Reds on a Bosman transfer last summer, and was initially viewed as a coup by the club.

But injuries and poor form meant that the 29-year-old found playing time hard to come by, as he made only nine Premier League starts throughout the course of the campaign.

The arrivals of Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing saw the former Chelsea man being linked with a move away from Anfield, and he eventually made a season-long loan move to the Ligue 1 club.

'There were lots of reasons why I chose Lille - they are a beautiful club, with a family atmosphere and they play attractive attacking football,' Cole said, according to The Mirror.

'But I like the challenge, too. I want the chance to play in the Champions League, and maybe get people in England watching French football and watching me by bringing some success to the club.

'I admit it hurt me that it did not work out at Liverpool. I am a winner, and it will stay with me that I didn't have a successful time at the club, because obviously I went with the ambition of being a success.

'But I can't look back, I have to move on to the next challenge, and this is a perfect challenge.

'Back home, they don't know much about French football, and I hope to change that.'

Despite expressing unhappiness at being unable to achieve what he wanted to at the Merseyside outfit, the midfielder insisted that he harboured no ill-feeling towards the club.

'The support I received from everyone at Liverpool was great and it was a huge honour to have a chance to play at Anfield but things just didn't work out as I hoped they would, unfortunately,' he added.

'It goes without saying that I wish all the players, supporters and staff all the very best for the rest of the season.'
